The story of

Flow is a concept found in the field of positive psychology.

Definitions are evolving and you’ll find the concept of ‘flow’ described as:

  • The neurobiology of excellence.
  • Finding your groove.
  • In the zone.
  • Stretched but not stressed.
  • The ultimate state of positive engagement.
  • Personal excellence.

Why we’ve chosen ‘flow’

We are drawn to the concept of flow because to us it is:

  • Positive
  • Personal and;
  • Powerful

“Completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

–Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

–Mahatma Gandhi

The pioneers of Flow

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, first coined the term ‘flow’ in his book Flow: the psychology of optimal experience.

Professor Csikszentmihalyi describes flow as being:

“Completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

Martin Seligman

Martin Seligman is Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a respected pioneer in the field of positive psychology and a prolific author.

Professor Seligman built on the work of Professor Csikszentmihalyi and incorporated the concept of ‘meaning’ in relationship to ‘flow’. This work draws out the idea that in order to nurture a deep and enduring happiness we need to identify what represents ‘meaning’ to an individual. By doing so, an individual can identify and apply their unique strengths and develop their virtues towards an end bigger than themselves.

“Being the very best and slightly stretched version of you that you possibly can be.”

There are many authors and researchers who have since built on the concept of ‘flow’ slightly modifying how they define it. All our reading indicates flow is a key aspect of positive psychology and in the simplest form refers to being the very best and slightly stretched version of you that you possibly can be.

Flow is positive. It is the psychology of improving your position, mindset and personal resilience. We believe it is aspirational and a better way to live.

Flow is personal. Your strengths, experiences, motivations and personal drivers are unique to you. Developing your personal flow is exactly that. Unique to you.

Flow is powerful. We know that making the smallest of changes in your mindset or how you view the world can have a massive impact on your quality of life. Small changes = big impact.

The journey of flow:

  • Aspires to achieve personal excellence.
  • Seeks balance.
  • Enhances self-awareness.
  • Nurtures a positive mindset.
  • Develops personal resilience.
  • Is engaging.

This is why we invest in developing the tools we do. We are passionate in helping people (and ourselves) identify their strengths and drivers to create better lives for themselves. We work to drive personal excellence in the workplace because ‘flow’ is just better!

Our emotional intelligence tool eqflow® is a great example of this. If IQ (intelligence quotient) is a measurement of cognitive ability then the counter EQ (emotional quotient) is a measurement of emotional intelligence or ability.

Western society has for many decades heavily weighted IQ as the be all and end all. This is done through the education system and how many employers have historically recruited. Right now, there is a clear emergence of awareness and a vast body of evidence forming that tells a very different story. That is, a balance of EQ and IQ features heavily in individuals who go on and flourish. Often they are the most successful in their careers and lead fulfilling personal lives.

Our Approach

We drive personal excellence in the workplace with our dynamic professional development portfolio.  We’ve brought the best and latest to one place.

We approach emotional intelligence, social intelligence, resilience and motivation as abilities. With the flowprofiler® family of assessments, training and coaching these abilities can be developed. They can be improved. Everyone can find their personal and professional flow.

Everyone can discover personal excellence.
