Personal resilience is the combination of being optimistic, curious and independent. It involves having a healthy self-esteem, and being adaptable. It also involves the ability to be assertive.
In other words, does a person tend to look on the ‘brighter side’ of a situation? Are they keen to learn and develop? Are they able to be emotionally detached and look at a task objectively?
Do they have a high regard for their own self worth? Are they able to endure and bounce back from difficult situations? How easily can they adjust to new circumstances? Do they seek improvement? Are they certain in their actions and can they articulate their views clearly?
Optimism: is having a positive outlook, remaining upbeat under pressure, focusing on what you enjoy and getting excited about new possibilities and ideas.
Unbiased: is being objective and rational. It is taking a calm and calculated approach, taking time to consider problems and to separate feelings and emotions from rational decisions.
Self-Esteem: includes having a sense of internal worth, having a clear purpose, speaking positively to oneself and recognising one’s strengths.
Perseverance: involves persisting during challenging times, bouncing back from difficult situations, dealing with what is in front of oneself and enduring change and ambiguity.
Adaptability: is seeking alternative views and ideas. It is adapting to new environments, testing one’s own assumptions and coping with limited information.
Assertiveness: is being certain in your actions. It is being confident to articulate your strong opinions and views to others. It commands respect and delivers messages with authority and impact. It arrives at decisions quickly and follows through on proposed actions.
